Can you use an Apple Gift Card for App Store subscriptions?

An eligible Apple Gift Card can fund subscriptions billed through the App Store after you redeem it to your Apple Account balance. Apple says that balance can pay for apps, in-app purchases and subscriptions to apps from the App Store, although some subscriptions and purchases are excluded and a valid payment card may still be required.

First confirm who bills the plan. Apple Account balance is for eligible Apple purchases; it is not a general payment balance that you can enter on a developer's website. An app may sell both an App Store subscription and a separate web plan with a different price, period or feature set.

Similar card names can hide an important difference. Apple Gift Cards and supported App Store & iTunes cards can be redeemed for eligible Apple Account purchases. An older Apple Store Gift Card is a separate product and cannot be redeemed in the App Store or iTunes Store.

Apple also restricts redemption by country or region. A card bought for the US storefront should not be assumed to work in another country's storefront. Check the country on the card and the Media & Purchases country on the recipient's Apple Account before paying.

• Confirm the exact card type, country and currency.
• Confirm the Apple Account storefront before buying a gift.
• Do not treat a gift card as a way to unlock another country's subscription price.

Use the App Store redemption flow on the intended Apple Account, then confirm that the balance appears before the subscription charge. Keep the purchase receipt because Apple or the retailer may need it if the card was not activated or cannot be redeemed.

Account balance is personal. Members of a Family Sharing group cannot spend another member's balance. You should also keep any payment method that Apple requires on file and verify the next renewal date rather than assuming every future charge will use the balance.

Suppose you pay $90 for $100 of usable balance with no extra fees. Each dollar of balance cost $0.90, so a $20 eligible subscription charge consumes balance that cost you $18. This is an illustrative calculation, not a current offer.

You still paid $90 upfront and retain $80 of Apple balance after that charge. Unused balance is not cash returned to you. Fees, currency conversion and a future retailer voucher can also reduce the apparent saving.

• Apple's charge is the listed amount for the exact plan and period.
• Your cash cost includes the gift-card price and any fees.
• A retailer promotion is not an App Store subscription price-drop event.

Open the subscription plan you intend to pay for and check its country, local currency, product identity and billing period. A monthly App Store plan cannot be replaced in the calculation by an annual website plan simply because both use the same app name.

App Price Atlas records public Apple price observations, not checkout eligibility. Taxes, account region, accepted payment methods and the developer's current billing options can still affect the final purchase. If you only need to add balance, Apple may also support a direct account top-up without a gift card.

Apple provides a US gift-card purchase page with email and mail delivery and states that those cards are valid only for US transactions in Apple properties. For another storefront, begin with Apple's local website and confirm whether gift cards are offered there.

For third-party retailers, verify the storefront country, face value, total payment, delivery method, activation and refund terms. A current retailer deal needs its own dated check; a static guide should not imply that an old promotion is still available.
